Herwin Sutrisno, a Dayak Ngaju man, successfully defended his dissertation manuscript entitled Acculturation of Balinese and Dayak Ngaju Culture in Bali Basarang Settlement in Central Kalimantan. The research supervised by Prof. Dr-Ing. Ir. Gagoek Hardiman, as promoter, and Edward Endrianto Pandelaki, ST., MT., Ph.D., as copromoter, has started his research related to the uniqueness of the Bali Basarang Settlement as a research locus on the island of Kalimantan. Post the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963 on the island of Bali, Balinese people from the southern part of the island joined the transmigration programme, with Basarang Sub-district in Kapuas Regency, Central Kalimantan Province, as the destination. The convergence of the cultural elements brought by the Balinese transmigrants with the cultural elements of the local community (Dayak Ngaju tribe) led to acculturation in Basarang. The phenomenon is very unique and there are still few theories that can explain it. Through the case study method, the man born in Camba on 16 June 1976 managed to convince the internal examiners, Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Imam Buchori, ST, Prof. Dr. Ir. Nany Yuliastuti, MSP, and Dr. Ir. Atiek Suprapti, MT. His research shows that based on case analysis and cross-case analysis, it was found that the space and architectural forms formed from the acculturation of Bali and Dayak Ngaju are physical in nature, namely: (1) Orientation: handil-land orientation, anjir-land orientation, land-flood orientation and handil-flood orientation; (2) Ornaments: crossing lisplang on the roof, Batang Garing and Burung Tingang ornaments, Burung Tingang and Talawang ornaments, Talawang ornaments, talawang ornaments and crossing lisplang; (3) Space functions include temporary changes in micro and macro space functions, limiting space functions, separating space functions, combining space functions; and (4) Space patterns include space discosmis. Gugon tuwon behaviour causes Balinese transmigrants to imitate Dayak Ngaju architectural forms. The second reason is that the village paradigm of kala patra has an open nature with different cultures. Openness causes the Balinese transmigrant community to survive and remain harmonious with the Ngaju Dayak community. The results of this research have been defended before an external examiner, Dr. Asep Yudi Permana, S.Pd., M.Des, who was invited from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) Bandung, along with a team of examiners led by Prof. Ir. M Agung Wibowo, MM, MSc., Ph.D., at a closed session on 25 June 2020 which was conducted online, based on the trial protocol related to the Covid-19 pandemic. Herwin Sutrisno graduated cum laude as the 53rd doctorate in the Architecture and Urban Science Doctoral Programme, Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Diponegoro University (UNDIP).
