Intan Hapsari Surya Putri, a young researcher from Semarang, has successfully completed her doctoral studies with a dissertation titled “Cross-Scale Interactions in Flood Risk Management in Semarang City.” The final doctoral promotion defense, held on August 15, 2024, was led by Prof. Dr. Ir. Atiek Suprapti, M.T., and Intan was recognized as the 90th doctoral graduate in the Doctoral Program in Architecture and Urbanism, Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, Diponegoro University. Due to Intan’s current involvement in a collaborative research program at the Technical University of Berlin, Germany, the dissertation defense was conducted online.
The dissertation defense process included several stages: the proposal defense, feasibility defense, and final doctoral promotion defense. Internal examiners were Prof. Dr. Ir. Atiek Suprapti, M.T. (Head of the Doctoral Program in Architecture and Urban Planning, Diponegoro University), Prof. Dr. Ir. Suripin, M.Eng (Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, Diponegoro University), and Prof. Dr. sc. agr. Iwan Rudiarto, ST, MSc (Professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Diponegoro University). Additionally, Prof. Ir. Bakti Setiawan, MA, PhD (Professor of Urban and Regional Planning, Gadjah Mada University) served as an external examiner. The dissertation was developed under the guidance of Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Imam Buchori, S.T., as the primary supervisor, and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wiwandari Handayani, S.T., M.T., MPS, as the co-supervisor.
With a background in urban and regional planning, Intan Hapsari completed her studies and research in 3 years and 11 months, focusing her work on Semarang. Her research integrates cross-scale interaction concepts in flood risk management with the panarchy theory. Using the panarchy framework, the study analyzes cross-scale interactions in flood risk management from local to national levels and examines temporal changes affecting the system in Semarang. The research demonstrates that cross-scale interactions ensure every stage of the risk management cycle is considered, enhancing the city’s resilience to disasters. This study advances our understanding of resilience and adaptation in flood risk management and significantly contributes to disaster management literature and practices in coastal cities.
As an awardee of the Magister to Doctoral Education Scholarship for Outstanding Undergraduates (PMDSU) from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, the 28-year-old Intan Hapsari has actively participated in various academic activities, including international conferences.
